4 Years in Business:

What I Wish I Knew When I Started!

Picture
April marks four years since I officially launched my business, and honestly? It has flown by. I started my VA journey in late 2019, taking courses, experimenting, and making a very fluid business plan. But it wasn’t until April 2021 that I truly took the leap.
Since then, I’ve built something that not only pays my bills but allows me to support other business owners in a way that feels right to me.
Over the years, I’ve learned a lot—some things the hard way, some through trial and error, and some from the incredible clients and business friends I’ve made along the way. So, here are a few things I wish I had known back then:
1. You don’t have to follow the “rules”
There’s no one-size-fits-all way to run a business. Some people swear by rigid schedules, while others thrive with a more flexible approach. Some love networking events; others prefer quiet, behind-the-scenes work. The key? Figure out what works for you and own it.
2. Pricing isn’t just about numbers
I used to feel awkward about setting my prices—like I was asking for a favour instead of running a business. But pricing isn’t personal; it’s a tool to build a sustainable business. When you price with intention, you create a foundation that supports both you and your clients.
3. Social media is a tool, not a lifeline

Meta and other platforms are great for visibility, but they’re not yours. I learned to decenter social media and build an audience through email, referrals, and strong client relationships—things that won’t disappear overnight with an algorithm change.
4. Systems and planning save your sanity
Winging it isn’t a strategy, and even the most fluid plan takes a little effort and lots of consistency. Whether it’s managing client projects, keeping track of invoices, or planning content, having solid systems in place makes everything smoother.

That’s why I don’t just talk about productivity—I build it into my life. That doesn't mean constantly producing - it also means self care and delegation. From smart automations to my Monthly Plan Alongs, I’ve seen firsthand how the right tools and workflows keep businesses running (without the last-minute chaos). Planning doesn’t box you in—it gives you freedom.
5. The right clients make all the difference
I’ve worked with incredible people who align with my values, respect my expertise, and make work genuinely enjoyable. But I’ve also learned that not every client is the right fit, and that’s okay. Saying no when something feels off makes room for the right opportunities.
Final Thoughts:

If you’re growing a business, be kind to yourself. No one has it all figured out, and the most important thing is to keep going, adjust as you learn, and trust that you’re building something meaningful.
